Ron & LeatherbackI am currently the Program Coordinator of the Professional Teacher Education Masters Program for science and mathematics teachers at Oregon State University. I earned my Ph.D. in Science Education at Oregon State University in 2009. My research interests center around providing context for the content of science.  Therefore I am interested in topics such as the nature of science, the history of science, and inquiry  in science and the science classroom, among others. I am also interested in evolution education and the use of new technology and social media tools in the classroom.  I have recently started a blog as a place to discuss science, education, and technology issues and ideas.

Outside of academia, I enjoy traveling! As a teacher, I was able to take summers to see as much of the world as I can. Recently I worked in Namibia with the Cheetah Conservation Fund as their education coordinator working on both local and international conservation education projects (see article). It has also been a wonderful base with which to explore southern Africa!  To see photos of various trips, click on ‘Travel Photos‘ above.

For two summers I co-taught a course in great cat conservation in Namibia in which current U.S. teachers learned about local conservation efforts and worked with local educators to form partnerships to enrich both classrooms. This summer I co-taught a similar course to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. These courses are offered through Earth Expeditions, an organization housed at Miami University that offers unique opportunities for U.S. teachers centering around environmental education and outreach.
